Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out in to the world. 1 John 4:1

Not everything done “in the name of Jesus” or because “God spoke to me” or “God gave me a vision” is actually from God. John warns us of this in the scripture above.

We test such things against God’s Word to see if it is truly from God. God will never contradict His Word because He is not the author of confusion (1 Cor. 14:33). He does not flip flop on things. He is steady and secure (Hebrews 6:19).

But what if you’re not exactly sure where to look in His Word to test whether something is or isn’t from God? Perhaps a good scripture to start with is John 16:13-14:

“But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you in to all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify Me because it is from Me that He will receive what He will make known to you.”

Jesus says the Spirit of Truth will glorify Him. So when someone does/says something 'in the name of Jesus' or because they felt 'led by God,' a simple question to ask yourself to test it would be “Is Jesus being glorified?”

That's our purpose in life! To glorify Jesus!

In Christ alone,
