Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13, ESV)
While this verse is ultimately speaking of Christ and his sacrifice on the cross, it certainly reminds us of how much love it takes for anyone to lay down their life for others.
Many people gave their lives on September 11, 2001 for others, including Todd Beamer. It’s well known that Todd was a committed Christian. He and his bride Lisa both loved the Lord. Todd showed the world just how much he loved the Lord on that dreadful morning 20 years ago!
He realized the end was near, and realized that he needed to do something to lessen the severity of the catastrophe. He tried to call his wife but couldn’t get through, so he talked to an operator and asked her to pray the Lord’s Prayer with him. Then he said,
“Help me Jesus! Let’s roll.”
Todd and the other passengers did the unthinkable. They stormed the cockpit, overpowered the terrorists and drove the plane into the ground. Only the Lord knows how many lives were saved that day as a result of what Todd and other others did!
Todd and all of the Flight 93 passengers are an excellent example of what it means to love and esteem others as more important than oneself (Phil 2:2-3) and to love others even unto death (John 15:13).
This weekend, let us pray for Lisa, Todd’s widow, and all the families of the 9/11 victims, and be thankful for the many, many sacrifices they made for us and our great nation.
In Remembrance,
Pastor Myke
