"Let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price."
The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price. Rev. 22:17
Dear Lord Jesus, of all final commands with which you could have finished the Bible, I’m thankful for the one you chose. Instead of “Do more, try harder,” you went with, “Come, thirsty ones! Come, desiring ones! Come and take the free gift of the water of life.”
Thank you, many, many times over. For I am thirsty, I do wish to come, and I do so right now—gratefully and expectantly. Fill me afresh from your artesian fountain of grace. No other libation in life can possibly satisfy like the living water you freely give.
The bitter waters of sin and self-righteousness only made me sick. The deceiving waters of my broken cisterns satisfy ever so briefly. The illusionary waters of countless mirages proved to be just that—dry dreams.
So once again, I bring my thirst to you. I’m thirsty to know you better and better, Lord Jesus. I’m thirsty to be filled with the Holy Spirit. I’m thirsty to be quicker in my repentances and slower in my excuses. I’m thirsty to be more generous and less fearful. I’m thirsty to be freer to love others, as you love me
I’m thirsty for the wedding feast of the Lamb, when the bride will no longer say, “Come!” but will say, “We are here, all of us—the entire family!” I’m thirsty for the unimaginable wonders of the life we’ll forever enjoy in the new heaven and new earth. I’m thirsty for the Day of no more cancer, Alzheimer’s, or common colds; no more broken bones, broken hearts, or broken promises; no more fight, spite, or flight.
I’m thirsty for the Day when God’s glory will cover the earth as the waters cover the sea. I’m thirsty for the Day of no more thirst. Lord Jesus, I have no doubt you’ll fully satisfy all of these thirsts, in your perfect time. Grant me grace until then. So very Amen I pray, in the fullness and faithfulness of your beloved name.
